Situation: Starting Wednesday, June 16, 2021, there will be a tower crane on the Campus of Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The tower crane will be the first of two tower cranes that will be on site for construction activities over the next several years for the Crystal Springs Tower addition to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Background: The tower cranes will be used for construction activities at the site of the future expansion. The project site is adjacent to the South Tower of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital which is the site of the rooftop helipad.

Assessment: The first tower crane will be placed the on June 16th and 17th with operations set to start on June 21, 2021. The center of the tower crane will be approximately 348.5 feet from the edge of the helipad. The jib tip radius will be 266.6 feet; therefore, the tip of the jib will be approximately 82 feet from the helipad. The height of the tower crane will be 260 feet at the tower peak or apex. This will be approximately 80 feet higher than the rooftop helipad. A 75-foot crane will be used on June 16th and 17th to set the tower crane in position.
The center of the second tower crane will be approximately 247.2 feet from the helipad. The jib tip radius will be 171.1 feet; therefore, the tip of the job will be approximately 76 feet from the edge of the helipad. The height of the tower crane will be 210.9 feet at the tower peak or apex. This will be approximately 31 feet higher than the rooftop helipad. It will not be set until February 2022.
When the tower cranes are not in use, they will be weathervaning (free slewing mode).
Recommendation: All aircraft utilizing the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital rooftop helipad are asked to exercise caution on approach and departure.
